Save the Whales
Scientists recently reported that between 30 and 50 North Atlantic right whales were swimming in the Bay of Fundy off the coast of New Brunswick, Canada. They should have begun their southern migration by this time of year. The problem with the right whales staying in these northern feeding grounds longer than usual is that the Canadian lobster fishing grounds are opening this week in the very same area.
This puts the most endangered whale on the planet in the middle of danger. Because there are only about 350 North Atlantic right whales left, the loss of even one animal contributes to the risk of extinction.
Entanglement in fishing gear is the second leading cause of death for North Atlantic right whales, and lobster gear is one of the leading culprits. Lobster gear is typically set in strings of traps that lie on the ocean floor. Whales and other wildlife can get tangled in vertical lines that connect the traps to buoys at the surface. They can also get tangled in groundlines, the horizontal lines that connect the traps together.
