The diamond trade continues to fuel civil wars, destroying countries, and has funded devastating wars across Africa that have claimed nearly 4 million people and displaced millions more.
Wars in Angola, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have all been fuelled by the diamond trade, and the diamond industry agreed in 2002 to regulate the diamond supply chain. however the trade in blood diamonds continues.
It has been reported that $23 million worth of blood diamonds are being smuggled each year from the Ivory Coast of Africa and sold worldwide, and many believe the figure to be much higher.
Despite legislation and promises from the diamond industry and western governments, not enough is being done to prevent diamonds and precious stones from being used to fund wars and atrocities, creating havoc in some of the poorest countries in Africa.
