SPUSA (St. Paul University Student Association) is a group of students who have been democratically elected by the student population. Among many things, their job is to listen to the needs of the student population and to represent the student community.

In the past year, the University administration has had issues with SPUSA, specifically with the opening of a Pride Centre on campus and with the fact that SPUSA offers free condoms to students, upon request.

In a recent letter addressed to SPUSA president Khadeejat Ozioma Momoh, Danielle Tessier (Vice-Rector of the university) ordered:

(quote) It is evident that the distribution of condoms must cease and the use of the name 'university' needs to be completely abandoned from your sign, especially when it contravenes with the Statutes. (end quote)

The statute she has cited reads:

(quote) The Association seeks to conform its spirit to the message of the Good News proclaimed by Jesus, the Christ. The Association, in the same spirit of Christian faith, hope and charity, endeavours to serve its members. (end quote)

Thankfully, the SPUSA executive has retorted that they disagree with this interpretation of their constitutional mandate.

They have continued to offer condoms, but it is not clear whether this will be allowed in the future

On March 14, Saint Paul University will be going into talks with SPUSA in order to discuss the 'identity' of the institution.

This is tomorrow.

We, the undersigned, want the university to know that we are paying attention.

We believe in supporting students who want to make informed and personal decisions about their health.

We believe in science, and know that condom use helps prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

We believe that it is unacceptable to bully, or to intentionally create barriers for students who wish to exercise autonomy with regards to their health.

We care about our health and the wellbeing of our communities and that is not going to change.
