Britain's airports can not expand further if we are serious about tackling climate change. According to the government's own figures, aviation is already responsible for 13 per cent of the UK's climateimpact and is one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
Flying is ten times more damaging to the climate than the train yet almost a quarter of flights out of Heathrow are to destinations which are easily reachable by train like Paris and Manchester. Switching to trains for easily reachable destinations would cut out the need for Heathrow expansion.
The Conservatives, who are against the proposed expansion have offered a viable alternative that would reduce the congestion: High-speed rail links from Heathrow to Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and London which would cut journey times between Birmingham and London to 40 minutes and between Leeds and London to under an hour and a half. This could cut Heathrow flights by around 66,000 a year, would begin in 2015 and would be completed by 2027.
