Obama – Please don't extradite Gary McKinnon
Gary McKinnon is a British hacker facing extradition to the United States to face charges of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time".
Following a legal battle that has lasted eight years, cost millions to taxpayers in both the UK and America, Gary Mckinon has had his last appeal against deportation to the United States to face trial, rejected. . The systems administrator is accused of hacking into 97 United States military and NASA computers in 2001 and 2002. The computer networks he is accused of hacking include networks owned by NASA, the US Army, US Navy, Department of Defense, and the US Air Force.
According to the US military, Gary McKinnon is a threat to national security and the US Justice Department has persisted in its ridiculous quest to extradite the 43-year-old Londoner. In reality
Gary McKinnon has never been any kind of threat to American security but due to his belief in UFO's and conspiracies organised by the US government, hacked into breached the US military systems.
He is not even regarded as a sophisticated hacker, and simply breached the security through something called “blank password scanning”, and because these military computers lacked proper security, he was able to roam networks in search of evidence of UFO's. He was so innocent and un-furtive in his investigations that he left his own email address, and messages such as “Your security is crap”.
McKinnon has admitted hacking into the systems of the US defence department and Nasa, but has campaigned to be tried for the crimes in Britain. It is brutal, mad and wrong to even consider sending this man to America for trial. He has been diagnosed as having Asperger’s syndrome.
His defence argued that the court should be sympathetic towards him because he suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. They also said extradition arrangements between Britain and the US are imbalanced, with twice as many British suspects facing trial being extradited to America as those who have gone the other way.
Following the rejection of his final appeal, there are fears that Gary McKinnon would not get a fair trial in the US, would be incarcerated in a US "supermax" prison for up to 60 years, all of which have raised concerns that he would become suicidal if jailed in the US.
