Help 1 in 4 families who suffer from lung disease

I am Paul Barratt, and I feel very lucky to have been the first person to have a heart and lung transplant here in Western Australia. Up until a few years ago I suffered from asthma, a heart condition, other medical challenges and I wasn’t able to take a deep breath like other people could. The truth is, only a few years ago, I was on oxygen, full-time - just to survive.

After my transplant I not only have a steady heartbeat but I have a great pair of lungs. That means that I am now able to take a deep breath and do things in life that I had never been able to do before. One of the things I have done since my transplant is to give back to the community and the organisations that have been there, quietly helping patients like me year after year.

This year, I am undertaking to complete Western Australia's world-class Munda Biddi Mountain bike track from Mundaring in Nannup. My son and I are intending to complete the 498 km over 13 days. The reason I'm doing this is to help raise awareness for lung disease and the work that the Lung Institute of Western Australia undertakes, as well as raise vital funds so that they can continue to undertake their essential research in providing support for Western Australians affected by respiratory disease now and in the future.

I am aiming to raise $49,800. This represents $100 for every km from Mundaring to Nannup. I ask you to support me by making a tax deductible donation directly to LIWA. You can donate as little or as much as you are able. Just know that any donation will make a difference.
